He is currently working of a project involving bacteriophages. His love of reading is what actually led him to his interest in biology and viruses. He became interested in viruses when he read an extremely interesting book called the Hot Zone by Richard Preston. This book painted a very real and terrifying image about some of the most dangerous viruses in the world. Alex also enjoys swimming and is on the Newton High Schools boy’s swim team.

Maricate Conlon is a junior at Newtown High School. She joined the applied science research course to further her interests in environmental and biological sciences. She competitively swims year-round and is a part of the girls’ varsity swim team. She is also involved in clubs at school; she is a member of the Guidance Honors Association and is her student class council secretary. In the future, she plans to pursue a degree in biological or environmental areas of study.

Drew Taylor is a junior at Newtown High School. He plays on the varsity soccer and golf team. He works at Rock Ridge Country Club as well as Southington Mountain as a snowboard instructor. He took Applied Science research to further his interests in ecology and the Long Island Sound. Drew is also Vice President of student council and a member of SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions. He is presently looking to apply to the Air Force Academy, where he wants to become a pilot.
Ivan Virovets is a sophomore at NHS. He joined Applied Research class due to his interest in physical and biological sciences, which started many years ago, at least the physical part, when he discovered plans for a tesla coil on the Internet and built one. From then on he loved high voltage, and then with the high school science program, also developed an interest in microbiology.

Maricate Conlon is a senior at Newtown High School where she is enrolled in the Honors Applied Science Research course taught by Mr. Frank LaBanca. Last year she conducted research on the bioremediation of wastewater and contaminated soil with the use of chitin. Her work was selected as the CT finalist to the Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Competition, held in Atlanta in June 2006. This year her research focus is the bacterial degradation of PCBs in the Housatonic River. Maricate is a member of the National Honor Society, and the student chairperson of Lead Out Loud! Teen Leadership Conference. She is also a nationally ranked competitive swimmer for the Wilton Wahoo National Team. Maricate will attend Lafayette College in the fall of 2007 where she intends to pursue studies in environmental geosciences and engineering.

Allison was certified for Scuba when she was eleven and continues to dive on shipwrecks in the Atlantic. She was the only girl on the Connecticut Barnacles, a competitive under water hockey team. During her sophomore year Allison attended Project Oceanology. This science and environmental program was based around the preservation of the sound at Avery Point in Groton. Her project involves studying invasive species and was encouraged by her passion for the ocean and Long Island Sound.

Wesley has swum year round since the age of eleven and uses his understanding of swimming and its techniques to give swim lessons during the summer. He has joined the applied science research class due to his interest in science and the lack of science courses provided in high school. Having completed all the required courses Wesley turned to this class to further his studies. Wesley prefers physics over other areas of science because he enjoys them as much as he is adept at them. Upon graduation Wesley aspires to get a degree in electrical and software engineering so that he may become a robotics engineering.

Instead of using a sinker, go with a lighter, floating lure that you can skim along
the top of the weeds to lure fish out. It would be wise to choose a fly that closely resembles
insects in the area you are fly fishing at. Know which types of lures and bait are best for the fish in the area where you will be fishing.
