Dr. Blake Videoconference

Author: Frank LaBanca, Ed.D.

Dr. Blake is a computer science professor at Quinnipiac University.  His bio is as follows:

I grew up in Maine and went to Princeton as an undergrad where I earned a BSE (Bachelor of Science in Engineering) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I earned a Masters and Ph.D. In Computer Science from Northwestern University where my research concentration was Computation Linguistics (a sub-field of Artificial Intelligence). I was a member of the faculty at Tennessee Technological University for a few years, and then decided to switch my research focus. I was a post-doc at the University of California, San Francisco in a Computational Biology lab, funded by among others the Sloan Foundation and the DOE. I came to Quinnipiac  in 2000 to start/chair the CSC program.

The video conference was by far the best one yet. Dr. Blake was very interactive, and funny, keeping the audience’s attention for the whole conference. In previous conferences, the presenter would speak for a long period of time before answering questions. Dr. Blake was very to-the-point with his lecture (keeping the audience entertained and interested all the while with a good sense of humor), and he involved the audience even more with a very long question and answer session, where he was able to answer the questions in his own way. This was another advantage for Dr. Blake. In the past video conferences, the presenters answered questions with a text book answer. Dr. Blake answered the questions in his own words, from his own experiences and beliefs. Dr. Blake was a very intellectual person, who was able to grasp and hold the attention of the audience.

This video conference was much more interesting than any other we have had. This was because he did not lecture for around an hour and then open the floor to questions. Dr. Blake talked about what his profession and then opened the floor to questions. This way of doing this conference was much more interesting and kept my attention. He was more of a normal guy than a typical doctor because of the way he answered questions. He would give the answer that actually answered the question but the answer that had some humor in it.

Like my fellow students I agree that this video conference was by far the best that Oxford High School has ever been a part of. Not only was it interesting, it was refreshing to be get out of the habit of video conferences being focused solely on the medical field. Dr. Blake was able to educate us about computer science in a fashion that did not read to us from a power point, or just speak without being passionate about his chosen field. The way he presented was very interactive, which made students more interested in what he was speaking about. My favorite part of his presentation was when he answered questions, because it wasn’t a text book answer it had life experiences included. In the future I hope that the video conferences can have speakers who present similar to Dr. Blake’s way and can be more interactive with students.

Considering my project is dealing with computers, and my scientific interests tend to focus on computer science; I was very interested in this particular presentation. Not only did it focus on my own interests, the presentation was incredibly well done. As was stated previously, Dr. Blake was very funny and kept me paying close attention, and I enjoyed the open format that he encouraged, considering I had many questions for him. I really liked his approach to the field of computer science, focusing more on the general topic of problem solving, as opposed to pure computer languages and operations. It really is the best way to go about the topic, and I hope that it really helped my peers understand a topic that is very important to me. I think the biggest thing that was really reinforced in my head was the fact that different approaches can be taken for different problems, and that there is no clean-cut way to solve a problem (i.e. using memory intensive, but accurate programs for a quick solution, but using memory conservative and well maintained code for re-used programs), which is a lesson that I will keep in mind throughout my career path, hopefully.

This videoconference was the best videoconference to date. Even though I have no interest in this career track, I found this to be very interesting and informing. I like the fact that there was no powerpoint and he was very interactive with us. We chose what we wanted to know. Dr. Blake was very funny and kept me interested throughout the presentation. He also anwsered the questions and gave enough information. I hope future videoconferences will follow this format, because this was the best by far.

This previous meeting with Dr. Blake definitely opened up my mind to what a computer scientist can actually do with a computer to solve problems. Dr. Blake opened up with a brief description of his job and moved on to questions right away, which made for a more interesting conference. He did not dwell on the statistics, although he did mention some; instead he informed us on how he goes about his job. Dr. Blake’s personality made the meeting fun while informing as well. This meeting was by far the best meeting this year as everybody else had said before me. This presentation was informative and interesting to me, as I have an interest in computers, yet know very little about them.

The video conference with Dr. Blake was by far the best. He was very nice, interactive, and he did crack a couple of corny jokes. He provided us with the information we wanted to hear, he had a lot of questions asked by us because he did not give a long boring presentation, he told us what he thought computer science was and opened the floor to questions, though he did direct us to some of the questions we could ask. He explained everything thoroughly and though his answers were long, they were quite interesting. His approach to the presentation was very helpful and the best one yet, I look forward to hearing more presentations like this, and it would be great if he would come back to the science class.

This was one of the best video conferences we have had so far. During it all, Dr. Blake kept all of us awake and interested as well as teaching us valuable information about the computing world. Though I personally do not see myself in that field, it helped me get a better understanding of what I would have to do to get into the world of computing. One example would be the fact that learning the different languages is more then just beneficial to using computers but almost a mandatory tocome close to understanding and making better computers. One such was java and another was rose. I also learned how crappy the company of Microsoft truly is. It is amazing that instead of just making sure that their products are working fine, they send them to us to use until they break so that we can send them back and they can fix the problem. Though the method works, it shows bad quality and lowers the amount of trust that a person can actually put into a company such as Windows. Again, this was a great video conference and I hope that we will have more like these in the future.
